Under a starless sky, Esme walked her dogs, Spike and Diesel, on the cobblestone path that ran through the graveyard. Taking the shortcut through the cemetery at night didn’t usually bother her, but tonight seemed different. She shivered. The air was chillier than normal and Spike and Diesel seemed to be on edge. Spike sat stock still, watching for any movement and Diesel was quietly growling at every little shadow or noise.
Suddenly, a skeleton popped out from behind a tombstone, his arms waving frantically. “Hey! Watch where you’re going!” it exclaimed. Spike and Diesel both growled a warning in the skeleton’s direction.
Esme stared at him a moment and then said, “You know you’re in a graveyard, right?”
The skeleton chuckled. “Exactly, it’s the best place for a quiet walk. Fewer people, more … atmosphere.”
Esme nodded her head in agreement and began to walk on. The skeleton fell in step beside her, rattling as it walked, “Do you mind if I join you? I’m just dying for some company.”
Esme smiled and rolled her eyes, “Great. A skeleton with dad jokes.” She motioned for him to continue on the walk with her.
The skeleton caught up to her. “Better bone up on your puns, then,” it chortled.
